Which programming language should I use to build a mobile website for my third year project?

I am focusing on RIM (blackberry) devices. I already design websites for desktop computers but never tried for a mobile website.

For my third year project I though I would create a website for mobile devices.

Is it possible to be done using php/mysql ? Simple HTML/CSS?

Do you know any books that would show you how to do it?

Any advice is helpful. Thanks a lot.

yes, it is very possible to make web pages with anything that is able to provide the data to client over http(s) in a format, generally html, that is supported by the device in question (preferably detected from request headers). The main point is to keep in mind the limitations (or akwardness) in using mobile devices — so keep it simple!

As for RIM i have no idea even as to what kind of browser support it has. In my country i have never seen one of them. icon wink Which programming language should I use to build a mobile website for my third year project?

Personally i do hower wish that more "apps" for mobile devices wouldn’t be shorcuts or simple wrappers to web sites. So if you target mobiles, make a real application!

You mean a WAP site? Yes you can create such sites easily with general purpose web languages.

The best book for you if you have previous web development knowledge is:

Mobile Web Development By Nirav Mehta ISBN: 1847193439

For the backend, it doesn’t make any difference whether you are building a website for mobile or desktop. The backend simply processes requests and output data to be presented. So you can use PHP, ASP(.NET), Java, MySQL, PostgreSql, MS SQL Server, etc for both.

The presentation of the output is what’s different. For blackberry and most modern mobile phones, there are browsers that support (X)HTML and JavaScript, so the only thing you need to worry about is the CSS part, making sure your website look reasonably well on a small screen. For older WAP-enabled mobile phones, you’d need to use WML (Wireless Markup Language), which is similar to HTML but much more limited.
