I know people who have used the method which your saying, however i havent used it. Ive got mines on pay as you go and I cant remember the last time i used it. But I do know that when I used it, it was a really good experience and it was cheap – £2 for 24 hours.

I use the same dongle on pay as you go. Mine cost £24.99 though. It works just fine so I would recommend them!
