Tie Downs

Why Proper Camper Tie Downs Are Essential If You Have A Camper That Attaches To Your Truck

If you have a camper that attaches to your truck it is essential that you use camper tie downs to keep your camper secure. Camper tie downs are an inexpensive way that you can protect your camper from sliding or grinding against your truck while you are traveling. The number one advantage to these tie downs is basically that they limit how far your camper is going to slide or move before it is caught. This will offer you the security you need to drive without worrying about what is happening to your camper. So buy some tie downs and stop thinking of the camper falling off during your next road trip.

One of the major brand names in camper tie downs is the Torklift camper tie down. This system offers four points for the tie down to work from. There is no belly and there is no crossbar, so these tie downs can really offer one of the tightest grips possible. You don’t have to worry about the make or model of your vehicle when you go buy these tie downs because they are universal and will fit almost all trucks and campers.

Some of the other brands that produce camper tie downs include: Hijacker, Happijac, and Putco Push Up Tie Downs. These companies all pride themselves on offering the highest quality tie-downs that are currently available.

Some of the tie downs will offer a better aesthetic appearance, like having chrome on the anchors or a cool design on the belly. But in the end most of the tie downs are going to work just about the same, no matter how much you pay for them. So you might as well choose your tie down based on what extra features are best for your truck and your style.

If you own a camper it is extremely important that you get a set of tie downs to help secure your camper to your truck. Even campers that come equipped with basic ties could use some extra help in securing your extremely heavy camper to your truck.

If you are looking for a great deal on camper accessories the Internet is a good place to start your search. You can find out all the information you need to know before you buy, plus you will be able to easily compare different products to see which ones will work best for you. Just remember that cheaper is not always better, so take your time in comparing all the different camper tie downs that are available. After you have narrowed your search then you might even consider stopping into your local parts store and seeing what they recommend as the best available model.

Wrapping Up The Truck Tie Downs For 18 Wheelers

Here is the fact about tie down, they probably are talking about totally different things depends on the context, for instance, ratchet straps for truck are definitely two inches and ten thousand lbs tie down while ratchets for pick up will be 1” and 500 lbs tie down, we’re only going to discuss about truck tie downs here, more precisely, we will talk about flat beds only, usually you will be able to see those trucks on high way.

When the jobs come your way, odds are you won’t be able to decide what kind of cargo will be put on your truck, the only thing you can do is to prepare for all the opportunities , it’s almost always not for you to decide what stuff will be on your trailer . Talking about flat bed trucks, quite some of the flatbeds come with winches installed, or you can install by yourself at a later time, then you can use winch strap to do the job without the hassle of having to tie down both ends of the ratchet strap.

Traditionally slide in winch and truck winch strap are most popular tie down devices for flat beds . There is one thing required for truck winch and winch strap tie down combination, winch bar, which is the tool to help you tie down the cargo on the flatbed, since you can only tighten the winch straps through turning winch barrel, this only can be done by utilizing winch bars.

Some flat beds come with winches installed, not all trailers have winches installed. When the trailer have the winches installed, we can use winch straps to tie down loads on the trailer , usually we tie down steel coils, concrete pipes, skids, anything that not too heavy for the 5400lbs working load limit. Both flat hooks and wire hooks may be used on 2”, 3” and 4” winch straps, but flat hooks are more popular than wire hooks, you may see flat hooks on all size winch straps while wire hooks mostly on 2” straps. Truck winches come in with two different flavors, two inches and 4 inches wide , but winch straps have width of 2”, 3” and 4”, it’s obvious you can put 3” winch straps in 4” winches, when we look at the length of the winch strap, the range is pretty wide for regular use, from around 20 feet to more than 60 feet, 27′ and 30′ being the most common length available.

Of course we just can’t leave out the most used tie down equipment for transportation businesses, ratchet strap. In fact that the ratchet straps are just the assembly of ratchet buckles and tie down webbing, which can be nylon or polyester, the combination of different ratchet buckles and different straps gives us many choices.

The ratchet tie down earned it’s popularity by being the most flexible, adaptable and capable tie down devices , from sedans to eighteen wheelers , you can see ratchet straps anywhere cargo needs to be secured. With flat hooks, wire hooks, cloth loops, chain anchors, even endless, ratchets just can’t have enough variety, how can we don’t love these ratchets? The smallest width for ratchets is 1”, 4” is the widest, while the length of ratchets may be anything from inches to more than 60 feet. The reason we say that ratchet straps are most popular tie down devices for most trucks can be found in this paragraph, even for flatbeds which use winch straps massively may find ratchet straps attractive if there are no winches installed on the truck.

Before you go out or get online to get these tie down straps , you should learn how to get more out of it while spend less , most important thing is the quality of the straps, maybe you know the local store stuff quality, when talking about websites you need to find out by reading other people’s the reviews, trucking blogs, such as trucker’s deal , customer feed backs, or by some other venues to determine whether the products and services are worth the salt.

The Truck Tie Down Straps

When it comes to tie down, you have to bear in your mind that there are totally different things, there are different kind of trucks, box truck, pickup truck, flatbeds, etc., they use similar or different tie downs, even for same kind of trucks, people probably will use totally different tie downs, say e track straps or plain ratchet straps for box trucks, so try to talk about generic tie downs is not a good idea, to make things simple, I’m sure you’ve already seen flatbed tie downs on the road, we will only talk about flat beds for the time being.

When the jobs come your way, odds are you won’t be able to decide what kind of stuff will be put on your truck, the only thing you can do is to prepare for all the possibilities , most of the time you don’t get to choose what you like or want to do. We are going to introduce truck tie down straps only, since the are popular tie down devices on flatbeds, and it should be the most popular tie downs on all trucks as well. .

For most flat bed trucks, truck winch and winch straps are what we usually use to tie down stuff, some trailers come with winches installed you only have to get winch strap. When you work with truck winches and winch straps, there is one thing you can’t live without: winch bars, these steel bars are essential for your job, so get one if you don’t already have one.

Usually most flatbeds will be sold with winches installed, there are still some of them come without winches though, in this case the drivers may use ratchet straps or binder chains as alternative. When the flat bed have the winches installed, we can use winch tie down straps to tie down articles on the trailer , usually we tie down steel coils, concrete pipes, skids, anything that not too heavy for the 5400lbs working load limit. Both flat hooks and wire hooks may be used on 2”, 3” and 4” winch straps, but flat hooks are more popular than wire hooks, you may see flat hooks on all size winch straps while wire hooks mostly on 2” straps. We can find 2” and 4” winches and 2” and 4” winch straps , depends on different applications , the length of strap can be 20′, 25′, 27′, 30′, 35′, 40′ or more than 50 feet.

OK, now let’s talk about ratchet strap which is the most popular tie down devices for all kinds of trucks or hauling  businesses. What we call ratchet straps are actually assemblies, the ratchet buckles with short straps, one foot or longer, and the long straps, 6 feet or longer.

The ratchet strap earned it’s popularity by being the most flexible, adaptable and capable tie down devices , from passenger cars to eighteen wheelers , you can see ratchet straps anywhere cargo needs to be secured. On commercial trucks ratchet tie downs are the best tie down devices for shippers , those trailers without winches installed will figure that ratchet straps are pretty important.

Before you go out or go online to buy these tie down straps , you will have to know how to get most out of them with less spending , top priority is the quality of the straps, most likely you will know the quality of local store stuff, when talking about online stores you should evaluate them by reading other people’s the reviews, trucking blogs, such as trucker’s deal , online feed backs, or by some other venues to make sure if the products and service are good or not.

Flatbed Tie Down 101: why choose the winch straps and winch bars

So far truck winches and winch straps are only being used with flatbeds, I don’t know the exact percentage but a big portion of flatbeds sold with winches installed, this is a big plus for most drivers since they only need to get winch straps and winch bars(assume they don’t have them) to get started, and the plastic corner protectors maybe required or optional depends on what kind of loads on the truck. A few different kinds of truck winches are available, most seen ones are slide in winches and weld on winches, to use slide in winches the flatbeds have to have rails installed at one side of the truck bed, 2” and 4” are most popular sizes of truck winches, and of course we can say that 2” & 4” winch straps are the most popular ones, 3” winch straps are not that popular but you still can see them from time to time.

The way the truck winch and strap system works is pretty simple, the mandrel, the part into which you can insert the tie down strap, can be used to tighten the winch straps easily, thus tie the loads down pretty much by just put winch bar into the winch side hole then turn as many rounds as needed until the loads are secured properly. The winch structure is pretty simple, there is a barrel goes through the winch body, one side has a though hole and the other side has a gear with a brake, in between lies the mandrel, just put the straps into it, close the brake on the gear will allow you the tighten the straps over the load, since the gear is only allowed to go one direction, when you untie the strap, open the brake, turn the barrel the opposite direction to pull the  strap off the load. You are required to use a winch bar with the truck winch, you can use something like a wood stick or wood beam with, it’s not safe and not legal as well.

There usually are 2 kind of standard winch bars, chromated one and black one, and two different combination winch bars, chromated and painted half yellow, you can find them online or locally. Sometimes people get confused with all the different winch bars, they are only used with truck winches after all, why all the different styles? It all comes down to personal preferences and specific needs, for instance, with combination winch bar you can use something else with it, say using a standard winch bar with a combination winch bar under some special circumstances.

E Track and Logistic Straps: Semi Trailer Tie Downs

The popular tie down system on semi trailers are E track tie down system, which consists of E Tracks and e track tie downs, E tracks come in with a few different length, such as 2′, 5′ and 10′, and there are two different variations , horizontal and vertical. The E Track tie downs have quite a few varieties, such as rope tie off, D ring with E fitting, cam buckle straps with E Fitting, ratchet strap with E Fitting, wood beam socket, wheel chocks which usually seen with E Tracks installed on the truck floor for bike or vehicle tie down and  there e track cargo bars with e fittings at both ends. But any E Track tie downs need E Track to be installed to work, so the most important thing is to install the E Track properly.

Here we will discuss E Track setup and safety tips .

When you mount the E Track you will have to look for the wall studs on the trailer, we will focus on doing it on the wall but the same principle applies to the floor as well. The wall stud is basically a big channel with a couple of flat spots on top to attach the plywood to, we just have to do the same to the E Track and bridge two of them somehow, when you figure that out you can use screws to hold the E Track up, you will need deep threaded wood screws or tec screws to get the job done. Basically this is all about installing E Tracks on the wall, and you will have to make sure the E Track sit as flat as possible on the wood. The key to safety is to use screws with deep threads, and put a screw into every hole if it is possible, and run the E track as far as possible (length wise), this helps to spread the load out as far and even as possible. But keep in mind that the outside wall is 2 inches away, make sure the screws won’t go too far!

When finish installing E Tracks, you will need to put it to test , just insert an rope tie off into the E Track, drag it all you want, see if there are any weak spots, loose ends or whatever feels not well secured, if there are any problems you will have to fix them before you put the system into real use.

Heavy duty tie down chains and load binders

Grade 70 chain and chain binder are heavy duty tie down devices , both chains and binders are made of carbon steel, the WLL of the chains and binders are higher than most comparable tie down straps , say we compare grade 70 size 5/16” binder chain(which has 4700lbs WLL) to WLL 3333lbs 2” ratchet tie down straps ,  3/8” chain(WLL 6600lbs) to 4” tie downs(5400lbs) , you can see  that the chains are much stronger, and the load binders are even stronger than same size chains, 5/16”-3/8” load binder(lever or ratchet type) has WLL of 5400lbs and 3/8”-1/2” binder has WLL 9200lbs . If we examine the design factor of chains and tie down straps, we will see that chains and binders have 4:1 design factor while tie down straps have design factor 3:1, that’s another reason we consider chains and binders are heavy duty tie downs .

The material recommended by National Association of Chain Manufacturer to make grade 70 chains is carbon steel, the criteria for base steel is Carbon 0.35% max; Phosphorous 0.040% max and Sulfur 0.050% max. As long as the choice made by chain manufacturers meets the recommended criteria and the final products meet or exceeds DOT requirements(or CHP, California Highway Patrol, or some other mandated requirements), we can use these products for transportation purpose and don’t have to worry about inspections.

We use these heavy duty chains and binders to haul heavy equipment, for instance, backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, these big rigs are tough or straps, we have to use steel chains to tie them down , when we talk about backhoe, forklift, we need at least 3/8” grade 70 chains and binders to secure them, for something which has less weight we consider 5/16” chains are good fit, of course we still have 1/2” and up chains and binders, these chains will most likely be used to tie down something out of ordinary, such as battle tanks, or some other applications require super heavy duty chains.

Grade 70 tie down chain, also called transport chain, can be used on anything but overhead lifting, you need at least grade 80 alloy chains for overhead lifting. We see people use transport chains to drag the trees, tow the docks, and to tie down the logs out of the the trees, you can go around to find more creative uses of these chains and binders.

What We Use to Tie Down Truck Loads

Truck tie down means a lot different stuff to different applications , we will focus on big rig tie downs in this article, specifically, we are going to talk about flat bed truck this time.

Since people put all kinds of stuff on the flat bed truck, sometimes they just have to , the needs for tie downs become complicated.

Now let’s talk about winch straps and truck winches, lots of flat beds have winches installed, you only need to get winch strap for your rig.

For most flat bed trucks, truck winch and winch straps are what we need, some trailers come with winches installed you have to get winch straps .

Some trailers come with winches installed, not all flat beds have winches installed . When the flat bed have the winches installed, we can use winch tie down straps to tie down articles on the flat bed , usually we tie down steel coils, concrete pipes, skids, anything that not too heavy for the the straps’ safe load limit . Winch straps usually come with flat hooks, because we usually hook the straps on the edge of the flat bed , of course the wire hook can be used too. There are 2” and 4” truck winches and 2” and 4” winch straps , depends on different applications , the strap length can be 20′, 25′, 27′, 30′, 35′, 40′ or more than 50′ .

Of  course we just can’t leave the most used tie down device, ratchet straps, out .

Ratchet Tie Down is most popular tie down straps because of their capability , you can put them almost anywhere when it’s applicable. The ending comes with quite some varieties, flat hooks, double J hooks , chain anchor , snap hooks, endless and more. And it’s width can be 1” to 4”, length can be a few feet to more than 50′ . On 18 wheelers ratchet tie downs are the most popular tie down devices for truckers , those trailers without winches installed will look at ratchet straps seriously .

To get these tie down straps, you have the choice between local stores and online retailers , depends on different situation , sometimes purchase them locally is a better choice , sometimes online deals are much better .

A Close Look of Ratchet Straps

Ratchet straps are assemblies of ratchet buckles with all kinds of straps with or without hooks, endless or not. The straps part of the assemblies can be made of nylon or polyester webbing, the safe load limit can be less than 100lbs to more than 1000lbs, the strap width can range from 1 inch to 4 inches, usually we can see hooks, loops or chain extension at both ends of the assembly.

The handle of the ratchet buckle have a few varieties, steel handle, aluminum handle or plastic coated handle.

Both nylon and polyester webbing are used to make the straps, but they have different characteristics, for shock absorption, we need nylon webbing and for tie down bulk loads we need polyester webbing straps, nylon webbing has better elongation than polyester while polyester webbing are stronger than nylon ones, in real world applications we need varieties, that is to say we need both nylon and polyester webbing  straps for different needs.

Webbing cab also be coated with suitable materials that will impact desirable characteristics, such as abrasion resistance, sealing to prevent penetration of foreign particles and matter, increased(or decreased) coefficient of friction, ultra-violet light resistance.

Of course the quality of the straps is the most important characteristic, to properly and safely use the ratchet straps is a must. Now how to find these straps with quality and low price? Your local store will probably have most straps you need, but the price to quality ratio probably will be pretty high, but this is not always true. Online tie down stores actually is a better choice if not  most of the time, you can search all around the country even the world to find the deal just for you, when you search “ratchet straps free shipping” you will find the best deal ever for your money.
